Interactive Media
Speaking on the creation of UM’s graduate offering of a Data Journalism and Visualization track within the MFA in Interactive Media, Visualization Program Director Alberto Cairo explained: This track is the product of a collaboration between the Departments of Cinema & Interactive Media, Journalism & Media Management, and Geography & Regional Studies. Other tracks proposed for this MFA are focused on game design, Web design, and storytelling. Visualization and infographics are the degree’s central component, and analysis, research, and computational skills are part of the course list, but most of the other mandatory classes deal with the visual display of information. While completing core classes, students will be able to use electives to specialize even further with areas of interest (such as: statistics, data visualization, journalism, GIS, Web development, etc., or a specific set of courses in UM’s Geography Department) leading to either an MFA in Interactive Media with a specialization in Data Journalism and Visualization, or, with a Certificate in Geospatial Technology.
